Full question: If the Scottish Parliamentary elections in May returns a pro-independence majority, Scotland could begin a “unilateral declaration of independence” (UDI), which is a formal process leading to the establishment of a new independent state by a subnational entity (in this case, Scotland) which declares itself independent and sovereign without a formal agreement with the state from which it is seceding (in this case, the United Kingdom). A motion on UDI was defeated at the SNP conference and is not thought to have the backing of the first minister, Nicola Sturgeon. However, it is the closest thing to a suggested strategy for independence put forward by Alex Salmond’s Alba Party.
